The Heart of the Volunteer
The Heart of the Volunteer
Starting on May 4th, 2026!
Paul Cummings is a Captain in the volunteer fire service with 25 years of experience, having started his journey in August of 2001. Over the course of two decades, he has served his community in nearly every capacity, developing not only as a firefighter, but as a youth sports coach, a leader, mentor, and advocate for the volunteer fire service.
Beyond the firehouse, Paul is known for his music, most notably “The Firefighter Song,” which gained national attention and became an anthem within the fire service. That momentum led to the American Firehouse Tour (2010–2014), where he traveled across the country connecting with firefighters and departments, sharing stories through music and firsthand experience.
Through those years, one thing became clear. The fire service has no shortage of stories, but it has struggled to tell the deeper ones. Not just what we do, but why we do it.
That realization led to the creation of The Heart of a Volunteer podcast.
The mission is simple. To have real conversations with firefighters and volunteers about what drives them to show up. The time, the sacrifice, the doubt, and the moments that make it all worth it. It is not about calls and statistics. It is about the human side of service that often goes unseen.
Paul’s goal is to help bridge the gap between the fire service and the communities it protects, while also giving a voice to those who quietly carry the weight of the job every day.
